BREAKING: £12 million windfall 'huge boost' to Rotherham regeneration plans

ROTHERHAM Council will be given more than £12 million to back its ambitious plans to regenerate the town centre.

Council leader Cllr Chris Read said when outlining this year’s budget in March that RMBC had been provisionally allocated £12.66 million from the Future High Streets Fund – and the cash grant was formally confirmed yesterday by the Government.

Local growth minister Luke Hall said that Rotherham was one of seven Yorkshire locations which would benefit, with Barnsley in line for £15.6 million and Sheffield netting £15.8 million.

MP Sarah Champion said the funding would be a “huge boost” to Rotherham’s regeneration plans, which include the redevelopment of the markets, a new library and a leisure complex on Forge Island.

RMBC initially bid for £18 million, meaning it will have to dip more into its own coffers to fund the works.
