End of the road for Masbrough Chapel

ANOTHER arson attack has finally decided the fate of an historic Rotherham landmark.

Rotherham Council experts have decided that the grade II, Georgian-era Masbrough Chapel and an adjacent carpet warehouse must be knocked down.

The derelict Allen's Carpets warehouse was hit by the latest in a series of arson attacks, the latest of which was earlier this week.

Council conservation officers and structural engineers decided this week that both buildings had to come down.

A council spokeswoman said: “A detailed inspection revealed the building had become a dangerous structure after the fire had left the walls in danger of collapse.”

Last month, the Friends of Masbrough Chapel and Walker Mausoleum disbanded after accusing Rotherham Council of being uninterested in the fate of the building.
