Child sex abuse trial: "Victim made to feel like abusers' property"

ALLEGED child abusers Arshid and Basharat Hussain used violence to groom their victims, a court heard today.

One complainant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, described in a police interview how the brothers would put her down and make her feel like "property" while grooming her for sex.

On one occasion the woman had to go to hospital after having her head pushed into a pub window.

In an interview played at Sheffield Crown Court today, she claimed to have first met Arshid, also known as Ash, when she was aged 15. She said the older man stopped his car near her and a friend, while they talked on a town centre street.

She said they swapped mobile numbers and Hussain started texting her the same day.

She said: "[Ash] used to come and pick me up from my house and we would just drive around talking for a bit. I thought we were in a relationship. We would see each other three or four times a week.

"He used to pick me up at the end of the estate where I lived. I think I was quite excited about being out with someone older. He had quite flashy cars, a different one every day."

She added: "He was quite nice in the beginning, but then it was as if he got into your head - trying to make you do what he wanted you to, not go places, like you were his property.

"Because I was young, I didn't know any better. That went on for about eight months and then he got sent to prison."

The jury then heard that Arshid sent his brother Basharat, also known as Bash, to meet the girl while he was in prison.

She said he met her at her parents' home and he stayed for some time, then began calling and texting her every day.

She became convinced that she and Bash were then dating, but he soon became violent towards her.

"He put me in hospital one time, when he pushed my head into a pub window," she said.

"But it was more mentally. He would just pull you down all the time, saying no-one else would want you now you were damaged goods, because you had been with an Asian.

"That was going on for about two-and-a-half years."

Both Hussain brothers deny all of the charges against them. The trial continues.
