Crags can be beautiful again

READING the digital edition of the Rotherham Advertiser; I was delighted to read under the District News section for MALTBY that the picturesque Maltby Crags (once was) is finally going to be given a face lift!

It states the site’s key geological feature is to be restored to a more favourable condition by the removal of Scrub from the Five Rock Faces and their surrounding area.  it would appear the work has been authorised under a Natural England Conservation and Enhancement Scheme delivered via the Sandbeck Estate!

When I visited Maltby in late 1996, I was absolutely shocked and horrified to see the Maltby Crags had been used as a dumping ground. Recalling when I was at school as an infant in the 1940s at the nearby school , we played on the Crags, Cowboys and Indians, using the rocks and pathways like the old western movies — great fun!

To see the same site years later in such a deplorable and ugly way was distressing, and one had to question the council for letting this happen. I actually wrote from Australia to the local government body voicing my opinions and asking that they look at making good the one area of Maltby that was an icon, with the Cenotaph in close proximity.

I truly hope this has been done over the years?  If not, then surely the steering group in conjunction with the council should fix the issue before the commencement of making Maltby Crags a place of beauty as it once was.
