VIDEO: Schoolgirl grills the PM at Downing Street

The St Bede's Catholic Primary School pupil won a VIP tour of Downing Street after showcasing her intentions to ask Mr Cameron about his vision for the north of England.

Isabelle won the competition, run by youth newspaper First News, after sending in a video of herself, filmed at school, of what she would ask the PM.

First News ran the competition in celebration of its tenth birthday and picked ten children aged ten from around the country to take to London.

Head teacher Amanda Wassall subscribes to First News and Isabelle spotted the competition when she was researching her Tudors homework and asked to enter.

Gavin Sharp, IT teacher at St Bede's, helped to put Isabelles impressive video together and said she had proved a natural in front of the camera, completing her appearance in one take.

She said the video was really fun to make.

Gavin, Amanda and Isabelle's mum Claire Hall all accompanied the Year 5 pupil to London last Wednesday and Gavin said it had been an incredible day.

"We had a tour of Westminster after Prime Minister's Questions and went into the chapel", he said.

"Isabelle thought it was like Hogwarts. Then we were taken on to Downing Street.

"I couldnt believe how huge it was, and it was like a best of Britain museum, with a Lowry on the wall and gifts from all over the world like a Faberge Egg."

But Isabelle said she was surprised at how small the House of Commons was and thought it would be huge after seeing it on TV.

Gavin said Isabelle, of Kimberworth, had been awestruck by the experience as Mr Cameron chatted to the youngsters for around 45 minutes.

When she put her question to the PM about his plans for the North in ten years time, he remarked that he was impressed she was thinking ahead and talked to her about the Northern Powerhouse.

Isabelle said: "It was a bit scary, then once I said it, it was OK."

Isabelle also cleverly sneaked another question in, Gavin said.

"She also wanted to know more about the gender pay gap. She amazed me about how she has absorbed all this information. We are so proud of her in school, and it's a lift for the whole area.

"She flew the flag for South Yorkshire and was the only northerner in the group. She did us proud."

The group also got a surprise when they bumped into Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, and the Downing Street cat.

Although Isabelle was a natural on camera she said she did not want to make a career out of it, and instead aspired to be a maths teacher.
