HAVE YOUR SAY: Broadband non-payment ‘unfortunate’

A SEVEN-figure sum invested by councillors to speed up a superfast broadband project has yet to be repaid — six months after it should have been.

Rotherham Borough Council agreed to underwrite a £1.596 million contribution to the BT internet project, despite objections from opposition members.

The cash should have been given back last December after funding was approved but Barnsley Council was late submitting the business case on behalf of the four South Yorkshire authorities.

Rotherham’s council leader Cllr Chris Read admitted it was an “inconvenient and unfortunate” situation.
