Alliance clubs have voted overwhelmingly to join forces with the powerhouse SYSL, with 25 in favour with just one still to respond.

If it goes ahead, it will make the league one of the strongest in the country and will give stability to the Alliance clubs who will join at the lower end.

The proposal is to feed the new clubs into a regionalised set-up. The league will be split into area zones from Division Three downwards with promotional and relegation to encourage the new clubs to progress up the ranks.

But the plans have still to be ratified by the SYSL clubs. They met last night to discuss the matter and a catalogue of issues — from both parties — have to be ironed out.

It is hoped that the go-ahead will be given at the SYSL's annual meeting on November 19, when fixtures will be issued.
