Rotherham cadets have an army adventure

ADVENTUROUS army cadets from Rotherham showed off their array of outdoor skills at an annual camp attended by detachments from throughout the region.

Around 50 cadets from Rotherham, Wath and Mexborough joined more than 400 others from across the region to take on challenges including kayaking, raft-building, rock climbing, archery and obstacle courses during the two-week annual training camp at Warcop, Cumbria.

Tests which challenged knowledge of first aid, orienteering, shooting, fieldcraft, overnight exercises, drill and sports were also on the agenda.

Kirstin McLuskie (18) from the Rotherham detachment said: “This was my first camp in Warcop and I had no idea what to expect, but I’ve absolutely loved it.

“It’s been a full-on two weeks, and tiring, but I’ve done things on camp, and in cadets generally, that few of my age ever get to do.”

The Mayor and Mayoress of Rotherham, Cllr John Foden and Mrs Kath Foden, were among 30 VIPs who visited.

The Hon Mrs Susan Cunliffe-Lister, Lord Lieutenant for East Yorkshire, also paid them a visit.

The Humberside and South Yorkshire Army Cadet Force is always looking for members and adult volunteers to join their ranks. Anyone aged 13-18 can be a cadet.

A spokesman said: “No military background is required and you have the opportunity to do something different and take part in a wide range of outdoor activities and training, including the opportunity to gain qualifications.”
