Candle and booze thieves handed severe penalties

TWO THIEVES who stole candles, booze and gift sets have been handed strict penalties by the courts.

Christopher Johnson (31) and Carla Anderson were sentenced to a suspended prison term and a lengthy unpaid work order respectively.

Rotherham Magistrates’ Court heard Johnson, of Broadway East, East Dene, stole eight Yankle Candles worth £175 from Boots in Rotherham.

He also pinched alcohol and clothes from Morrisons worth a total of £291.

The thief, said to have a previous record for dishonesty, was handed a 20-week prison term suspended for a year and a nine-month drug rehabilitation order for the two offences committed in November.

Johnson was ordered to pay compensation of £175.92 to Boots and a criminal courts charge of £180.

Anderson, of Wharncliffe Hill, Rotherham, was ordered to carry out  80 hours of unpaid work after magistrates heard last Tuesday how she stole wine and gift sets worth £64.50 from Tesco.

She was also ordered to pay a £60 victim surhcharge and £85 costs.
