Play tells of a Dare Devil's fight against fascism

Townsend Productions return to the Cast theatre in Doncaster on November 12 with Dare Devil Rides To Jarama, a new production about the International Brigades, the Spanish Civil War, and speedway superstar Clem Beckett.

In 1936 when fascism was on the rise in Spain, Clem ‘Dare Devil’ Beckett joined many other volunteers that formed the International Brigades to fight it.

He earned the name ‘Dare Devil’ on the speedway track and Wall of Death.

Beckett jointly founded the Sheffield Tigers Speedway at Owlerton, and rode all around South Yorkshire.

After fighting corruption in his sport, he opted to defend democracy against Franco’s rising fascist army and died at the Battle of Jarama in February 1937.

The play has been commissioned by the International Brigades Memorial Trust and commemorates the contribution and sacrifice of the volunteer International Brigades on the 80th anniversary of their creation.

Dare Devil Rides To Jarama sheds light on the political and social world of the 1930s, and all that inspired and confronted the Brigaders on their journeys to Spain.
