Lords reform the wrong referendum

Sir — I see Denis MacShane is now calling for referendum on reform of the House of Lords which will cost £100 million.

All three main parties have it in their manifestos that they want reform of the Lords, so why do we need a referendum on this? Why not give us a referendum on bringing back capital punishment. There is now talk of the appointed percentage being increased to 30 per cent or more!

Of course this is something most MPs want because the more appointees there are the greater the chance of them getting in there if they lose their seat. The Lords have always been a safety net for them. With over 800 members the Lords are a bloated affront to democracy and it’s well nigh time they went.
