Police issue river swimming danger warning

POLICE are reminding people not to use open water to cool down after a report of young people going into the River Don at Conisbrough.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said: “As temperatures continue to rise, it is essential to be aware of the dangers that rivers, lakes and reservoirs present.

“Places like rivers, lakes or flooded quarries are completely unsuitable for swimming as they hide a number of hidden dangers.

“River flows can be unpredictable and water is often deeper, colder and faster than expected. People should enjoy water safely in swimming pools or safer, specialist facilities instead.

“We urge people not to put their lives at risk by being tempted into open water during the heat.”

More than 400 people a year in the UK die in open water, where dangers can include temperature, currents, depth and hidden objects below the surface.
