Flyover demolition to cause town centre road closure

MOTORISTS have been warned to reconsider their route into parts of the town centre at weekends as workman prepare to demolish the Centenary Way fly-over.

Sections of the busy dual carriageway will be closed between 6pm on Saturday and 6am on Monday due to the extensive works taking place over the next five weekends starting from tomorrow (2).

Traffic will be diverted via the borough’s A-road network to the south of the town as works traffic makes use of the stretch of Centenary Way between College Road and St Ann’s roundabouts.

A council spokesman said: “We apologise for any disruption to traffic but the closure is necessary for ISG Ltd to develop the new site on the former Civic area for the new Tesco supermarket.”

Plans for the new Tesco superstore reveal that a new slip road will allow traffic to join Centenary Way from Drummond Street, with no reinstatement of the current fly-over system.
