Badsley Bounders boost cancer charity

A FEISTY foursome dubbed the Badsley Bounders have improved their own fitness — and a charity’s coffers — with a mini-marathon effort.

The team of school staff from Badsley Moor Lane Junior School in Rotherham have raised over £800 for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity by completing the Sheffield Half Marathon in under three hours

As well as having personal motives for taking part — all the team have had relatives, colleagues or even pupils who have been affected by cancer — their effort was part of a fitness drive setup by the school last year.

The running group was made up of Year 4 teacher and PE co-ordinator Greg Pursehouse, head teacher Sam Thompson, non-teaching assistant Gillian Gregory and caretaker Derek Twible.

Between them, they raised £838.06 for the cancer charity.

Sam said: “An ex-colleague received radiotherapy treatment at Weston Park Hospital and we are happy that our efforts have helped raise awareness and support for the hospital’s dedicated charity.”

The team are now adamant to continue running and support the Cancer Charity’s Do Your Bit campaign, which is encouraging as many people as possible to pledge to support the charity in whatever way they can in 2013.

The charity’s popular Run in the Park is being held at Graves Park in Sheffield, on Sunday, July 14, and is suitable for families and runners of all abilities.

The event is expected to attract hundreds of participants again this year but entries are still open and the charity is encouraging people from Rotherham to take part.
