Man of Steel to be guest of honour at Magna event

A FORMER steelworks will welcome a fitting special guest next month when business leaders meet for their annual charity bash.

A scale model of the proposed Man of Steel sculpture will be on display at Magna when Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce holds its award-winning President’s Charity Ball on May 11.

The sculpture will stand 125-foot high and overlook the area from a site in Kimberworth when it is erected in 2015, but the scale model is a more modest 8ft tall.

Themed around Yorkshire Pride, the ball will celebrate the region’s mining and steel heritage, then travel into its future at the forefront of technological and manufacturing excellence.

The event will also recognise Yorkshire businesses and the region’s cultural prowess in sport, music and art with entertainment from the Gillian Banks Theatre School.

Owen Gleadall, president of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber, said: “Guests will have a unique opportunity to see and be photographed with the model.”

Funds raised on the evening will be donated to four charities — the Barnsley and Rotherham Street Pastor Groups, the Barnsley Churches Drop-In Project (BCDP) and Rotherham homelessness charity Shiloh.
