Race for Life team call for Rotherham runners

Pink costumes were the order of the day when representatives from Cancer Research UK took to the streets to urge women to enter the charity's Race for Life.

Alison Mackfall, Cancer Research UK's Race for Life event manager, led a team of pink-clad volunteers with a rallying cry of “It’s Rotherham versus cancer.”

They were out to enlist new recruits for the event, which takes place in Rotherham this year on Sunday, June 17, at Herringthorpe playing fields.

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is a women-only series of events which raises millions of pounds every year for life-saving research into 200 types of cancer.

And the charity’s team was encouraging mums, daughters, sisters, grandmas and friends to sign up for the non-competitive 5km event, which they can take part in by walking, jogging or running.

Alison said: “Race for Life is not about being fast or fit—instead, it’s a celebration of sisterhood and hope.

“Most women are able to walk 5km in an hour while chatting and having fun.

“The really startling fact is that in the same period of time, around three people in Yorkshire will be diagnosed with cancer.

“We want to encourage women of all ages, shapes and sizes to enter Race for Life today.”

Last year, 2,300 women took part in Race for Life in Rotherham, raising 115,000.

To join Rotherham versus cancer, women can enter Race for Life by visiting the raceforlife.org website or telephoning 0871 641 1111.
