Faulty Christmas tree lights blamed for fire

FAULTY Christmas tree lights are thought to be the cause of a serious house fire in Balby in which three people were dramatically rescued.

Firefighters rescued three people from the blaze which broke out at around 3.30am on Sunday on Dixon Crescent.

Crews from Adwick, Doncaster and Edlington stations worked quickly to carry out the rescues and put out the fire, with flames begnning to shoot through the downstairs windows of the terraced house.

Two of the people, a man in his 30s and another man in his 20s, were neighbours who had tried to rescue the occupant of the house, a woman in her 20s.

Firefighters used a hose reel to put out the fire. The blaze started on the ground floor which was well alight.

All three people rescued were taken to hospital by ambulance suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

Watch Manager Dave Newton from Edlington fire station, said: “This was a really serious fire which has resulted in three people being taken to hospital. The fire on the ground floor of the house was fully developed.

“The early conclusions of our fire investigators are that faulty Christmas tree lights caused the blaze, so please check the safety of any lights you are using.”

People are reminded to:

Switch off fairy lights and other electrical appliances at night

Check lights for faults before using them, like broken bulbs

Keep Christmas trees watered
