Robotic arm installed at Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre

A GIANT robotic arm capable of lifting almost 120st has been installed at Rotherham’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre.

The KUKA KR1000 L750 — better known as Titan — is the first of its kind in the UK and is being used by its Integrated Manufacturing Group.

The IMG teams develop new ways of putting together complex products for partners in the aerospace and other high-value industries.

The extended arm gives the machine a greater reach for assembling aerospace pieces.

Head of IMG Ben Morgan said: “The benefits of the Titan mean it can not only be put to use handling large loads or moving large jigs for assembly, but we can use it for research, including drilling and machining operations.

“We will be coupling the robotic arm with research in large volume metrology and advanced control algorithms to improve the ‘off the shelf’ accuracy for these applications.”

The robot will become a key piece of equipment in the AMRC’s £43 million Factory 2050.
