We showed character, says Evans

STEVE Evans saluted his Rotherham United players after they dug out a win against struggling Stevenage despite being far from their best.

A late goal from Lee Frecklington clinched a 2-1 victory on Saturday after Francois Zoko’s equaliser moments earlier had looked like earning the battling visitors a deserved point. Wes Thomas opened the scoring just before half time with his second goal in as many games.

Evans said: “We were a notch down but as I’ve been saying for weeks and months, there’s real character in that dressing room. The players will run until they’ve nothing left and they did that again. We take pride in the win, it's equally as good as any we’ve had all season and Lee Frecklington’s goal was a stunning finish. To score from that position at that stage of the game when the pressure was on was deserving of the acclaim that the kop gave him.”

The Millers’ third win on the spin keeps them fifth in League One. With 16 games to go, Evans is aiming to keep pressing the teams above but accepts that a play-off place is the more realistic goal.

He added: “Brentford and Wolves both won again and they’re top teams with top players but we’ll see if they handle it when the real pressure comes on. All we can do is try to keep winning and if we do then we’ll maybe get ourselves a play-off place because that’s still the objective.”

The Millers return to action at Carlisle United on Saturday.
