Council teams keep Rotherham traffic flowing

STREETPRIDE teams from Rotherham Borough Council have been working round the clock over the weekend to keep the roads clear and as safe as possible.

A council spokeswoman said that preparatory work on the main routes had meant that there was sufficient time on Saturday and Sunday to allow salting teams to continue to work on secondary routes and side roads, as well as to deal with requests from the public.

The primary routes were continually salted throughout the night.

“Today all the salting fleet has been out on the main routes, while teams are re-filling salt bins.

“About 20 teams of staff — 50 people in all — have been hand-spreading salt at specific locations around schools, sheltered housing complexes and shopping areas,” said the spokeswoman.

The authority is reviewing its salt reserves on a daily basis - but still has about 2,500 tonnes of salt at its Hellaby depot.

The weather has caused some disruption to the waste collection service in Rotherham.

All green bin collections have been cancelled to allow the authority to concentrate on the collection of black bins and blue box and blue Bags.

Waste crews are working to collect as many bins as usual but they may not be able to collect all on the normal collection days due to the snow.

The council says that any households whose bin is not collected on its normal day, should leave it at the kerbside and crews will return to collect it as soon as possible.

The waste team will endeavour to get the collections schedule back on track as quickly as possible and ask for the patience of households as they work through the adverse conditions.
