New website launched for Swinton history buffs

HERITAGE enthusiasts will soon be able to access a raft of research and imagery thanks to a new history website.

Insights into the industrial heritage, sporting achievements and lives of former residents from Swinton and Kilnhurst have been compiled by a team of enthusiastic researchers who will see their efforts rewarded when the new site goes live next week.

A special launch event will see the new web-site officially unveiled at High House pub, Wentworth Road, Piccadilly, from 8pm on Wednesday (26).

Swinton councillor Ken Wyatt said: “This brand new website brings together in one place around a thousand images of the Swinton and Kilnhurst communities proud and fascinating past.

“We celebrate the achievements of former residents, industrial heritage, sporting life, times of conflict and much more.”

Local history buff and accountant Giles Brearley added: “There have been many hours of work dedicated to bringing this site to both a local and worldwide audience via the internet.

“Our photographer and researcher Ron James has unearthed many stories which we have never come across before in previous projects.

“We think it is a cracking site and hope people will enjoy visiting.

“More than that we want people to feel it belongs to the community also, a place to share their stories, recollections, events and images.”
