Millers dip to Wigan

ROTHERHAM United saw their cushion above the Championship relegation zone trimmed to six points after defeat to Wigan Athletic at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Two first-half goals from experienced former Premier League man Jermaine Pennant set the visitors on the way to a 2-1 win. Matt Derbyshire replied and despite pressing in the second period, the Millers couldn’t force a leveller.

A quiet first half was brought to life by two quality free-kicks in five minutes from Pennant, both of which left goalkeeper Adam Collin motionless.

Derbyshire (pictured) threw the Rotherham a lifeline right on half time when he nodded in Ben Pringle’s centre and after that they pressed without creating too many clear opportunities. Danny Lafferty might have done better with an inviting centre from Jack Hunt and Kari Arnason and substitute Jordan Bowery both blazed over.

After Collin excelled to acrobatically keep out a dipping effort from William Kvist, Wigan stopper Ali Al Habsi eclipsed that save in the dying stages with a stunning double save from Bowery to earn Wigan a fourth away with on the spin.
