VIDEO: Hero rescued resident from burning flat

A HAVE-A-GO hero rescued a resident from a burning flat before fire crews arrived to stop the blaze from spreading.

The man leapt into action after the fire broke out in a the bedroom of a ground floor flat on Wagon Road, Greasbrough, on Saturday.

The resident, who is in his 50s, has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and bailed pending further enquiries.

He was in hospital this week being treated for burns.

The extensive fire broke out in the bedroom of a ground floor flat on Wagon Road, Greasbrough on Saturday (July 4) at 8.30pm.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, who were called to the scene at 8.30pm, said the man had been rescued by the time fire crews arrived.

The spokesman added: “Crews did an exceptional job from stopping the fire from spreading to surrounding flats.”

Firefighters carried out a search of other flats but luckily not many people were home at the time of the incident, the spokesman added.

One neighbouring resident received treatment for smoke inhalation.

Crews from Dearne, Elm Lane and two from Rotherham station were in attendance for around one hour.
