Town to raise glass for second New York Beer Festival

ORGANISERS are expecting up to 2,000 real ale fans to join them for this year’s New York Beer Festival.

The event at the home of Rotherham United from Thursday, November 14 to 16, will showcase more than 70 real ales — many of which are from the region’s three breweries; Wentworth, Chantry and Harthill Village.

Organised by Rotherham CAMRA, last year’s New York Beer Festival was a sell-out and chairman Steve Burns said he was looking forward to welcoming guests to the 2013 three-day celebration.

He added: “Beers from all three breweries in the borough will feature along with other brews from Yorkshire, Derbyshire and two guest breweries from Nottinghamshire making this a truly local event.

“Real ale is making a strong comeback in Rotherham with two new breweries and more pubs offering real ale than ever before and we want to showcase the variety now available.

“The festival won’t just have ales on offer though, bottled beers, real cider, wine, hot food and live music will be available.

“Although sales of real ale are increasing against the overall decline in beer consumption, CAMRA is concerned about the numbers of pubs closing down and being replaced with flats or supermarkets and the Rotherham area is no exception.

“We want people to try the tasty, natural and wholesome real ales at the festival and then go back and encourage their local pub to stock it, supporting the local economy.”

This year’s event has been sponsored by Oxley and Coward, Raw Brewery, Eric Twigg Foods, M.A.E.S, Moorhead Savage, Harthill Village Brewery, Beer Central and  Merryweathers.

Admission is by £5 ticket only which includes a souvenir glass and brochure.
