Top award for young Grant

STAR student Grant Watkinson got the lion’s share of the spoils at an annual awards ceremony when he was named Student of the Year.

The 21-year-old, who has just completed his studies at Rotherham College’s Dinnington Campus, has been presented with the Maltby Lions Award for Student of the Year.

Lions representative Pat Harker awarded Grant a certificate and £200 prize at the Dinnington Campus Heart Space.

Pat said: “We're proud to support Rotherham College and each year we award a grant to help students.”

The Lions Award has been presented to a student from Rotherham College each year for the last four years.

Grant’s tutor, Jacqueline Moore, nominated him for the award because he had “consistently shown us outstanding qualities during his four years at college”.

Jacqueline said: “Grant came to college with no formal qualifications and has acted as a peer mentor, an assistant technician, an outstanding academic student and a true gentleman at all times.”

Grant will now be moving on to Barnsley University to study a Higher National Diploma in Animal Management after completing his college studies.

He said: “I never tried to earn it, I just did what I wanted and it worked out for me. It was the best time of my life here and I loved working with the animals.”
