Town get their pride back

SKIPPER Nathan Smith believes he is succeeding in putting the pride back into playing for Rotherham Town.

With money short at Clifton Lane lately, they have turned out a young side with a strong emphasis on local players.

That was one of Smith's aims when he took up the captaincy last summer and having seen them produce a solid second half to their Yorkshire League season, he believes he has a pool of players who not only have the ability to win matches, but care for the club.

"Money helps but it is not everything," said Smith. "When I first took on the captaincy I said I wanted to get young lads from Rotherham through who have pride in representing the town rather than players who just turn up for the sake of playing.

"We're developing a great team spirit. The lads are all from Rotherham or very close to Rotherham and it is a young team which is only going to get better."

Town's final fixture at Hull last Saturday was washed out. They finished fourth from bottom of the league but with one or new recruits during the summer, the ambitions are higher next season.

Smith hopes to secure funding from the pavilion bar to support the team, something it has not had in recent years.
