Appeal for Mexborough youngsters to back new café

POOL, computer games and table football are among the activities being offered at a recently opened youth cafe.

The Blue Chair Youth Cafe, a project launched by New Oxford Road and Highthorn Church in Mexborough, was given its random name by young people from the area, and volunteers now hope to attract new members.

Steve Hunt, one of the volunteers who helped to set up the cafe, said: “Young people can come in, chill and spend time with their friends and other young people as well as being able to play pool, table tennis and table football.

“We have also installed PS3 Playstations and Nintendo Wii Consoles for games lovers.

“Young people can also get involved in a variety of different craft ideas if they want.

“We have music and videos playing on big screens throughout the evening.”

The youth cafe is based on New Oxford Road, next door to Mexborough Youth Centre and Mexborough Athletic Club.

It is currently open every Sunday in school term time from 6.30pm- 8.30pm for young people of comprehensive school age and above.

Steve added: “We would love to see young people in the Mexborough area coming along.

“It is run by a great team of volunteers who have a heart for young people in the town.

“We are only open on Sunday evenings at present, but are looking at the possibility of extending this to other times in the week in the future.

“If this is the case, then we would seek to open on evenings when the youth centre next door is closed as we want to provide additional facilities where young people can meet in the town during the week.”

The New Oxford Road building is also soon be home to an Over 50s cafe every Tuesday from 11am to 2pm.
