Third man held in pub murder probe

A THIRD man has been arrested as part of the investigation into the death of 45-year-old Robert Hurdley.

A 47-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault and public order offences last Thursday for his involvement in an incident at the Don John pub, High Street, Maltby, on the evening of October 14.

His arrest came a day after professional boxer Daniel Gerrard was formally charged with the murder of Robert Hurdley by magistrates sitting in Rotherham.

A 35-year-old man was initially arrested after the ‘altercation’ at the Don John but was released without charge prior to the arrest of Gerrard, who has been remanded in custody.

Last week tributes flooded in for Dinnington Rugby Club stalwart Robert Hurdley.

The dad-of-three was a popular coach of the club’s junior teams and had been part of a charity fund-raising event just hours before his death.

DRUFC president George Tierney said: “Rob was a real family man and very popular at the club.

“To hear the ugliness of the word ‘murder’ connected to his name is extremely upsetting.”

South Yorkshire Police Officers are appealing for anyone who was in the Don Jon pub or nearby pubs on Sunday evening, or anyone with information that may assist their investigation, to contact them by dialling 101.

Callers should quote incident number 1242 of October 14.
