Rowing challenge taps into Olympic spirit

A new Olympian challenge is on offer at a Rotherham country park next week as would-be “oarsome” crews try to follow in the wake of Sir Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent.

Rother Valley Country Park has received funding from British Rowing's Explore Rowing Scheme to provide eight new boats which are available for courses, lessons and hire at the activity centre from next week.

Next Tuesday, the boats will be taken out on the water for their maiden voyage.

Councillor Roger Stone, leader of Rotherham Borough Council, said: “With the Olympics in full swing and the rowing events taking centre stage it’s great to have this link up with British Rowing.

“Rowing is sometimes seen as an expensive sport but this partnership means it will be accessible to so many more people and it would be nice to think that future Olympians could start off their sporting careers at Rother Valley.”

Try it sessions, courses, lessons and public hire will be available this summer. To find out more information and to book a try it session, a course or hire a single skull rowing boat contact the activity centre on 0114 247 1452 ext 2.
