Chearleading and dance classes - with the police

FREE street dance and cheerleading classes are being offered to young people as part of a South Yorkshire Police project.

The sessions have been launched at three locations including Mexborough School, under the SportFX scheme.

PCSO Craig Butcher said: “We are offering young people the chance to choose what kind of dancing they do, whether it’s street and modern dance or ballet and tap.

“It doesn’t matter what your ability, we just want to give young people the chance to try different styles. Our message is come along and have a go.”

More than 1,000 young people take part in football sessions and it is hoped to offer boxing classes in the near future.

The project was piloted in Goldthorpe in 2010, when antisocial behaviour dropped 50 per cent.

The Mexborough dance sessions take place from 6pm to 8pm on Thursdays. Visit the “about us” section at www.southyorkshire.police.uk for more information.
