11 years' jail for £2.8 million phone fraudsters

FOUR men have been sentenced to a total of 11 years in prison for their roles in a £2.8m fraud involving hijacking the accounts of mobile phone customers.

Kaleen Hussain, Waseem Rashid, Imran Rasab and Nadeem Ali appeared at Blackfriars Crown Court, London, today.

Rashid, Rasab and Ali were all found guilty of conspiracy to defraud last week. Hussain had already admitted the same charge.

It followed a four years of efforts by South Yorkshire Police. Det Con Mark Wootton, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “This was a complex and lengthy investigation into a highly-organised and effective conspiracy.

“Some victims of this fraud received phone bills in excess of £80,000 after the group used their accounts to repeatedly call international premium rates lines and foreign destinations.”

Hussain (30), of Maynard Road, Rotherham, was sentenced to 38 months in prison. 

Rashid (27), of Old Clifton Lane, Rotherham, was given 30 months. Rasab (35), of Hooton Road, Mexborough, was jailed for four years.

Ali (26), of Clifton Lane, Rotherham, was given a 21-month term.
