Dragon boats looking for crews

ROTHERHAM folk are being asked to get their rowing kit on and make a splash for charity.

More than 30 crews from Rotherham companies and organisations will battle it out in 30ft, brightly-painted, ornate Chinese dragon boats over a 200m course in aid of PHASE Worldwide.

Dragon boat racing, an ancient Chinese tradition with over 2,000 years of history, is Britain’s fastest-growing water activity.

Each crew is made up of up to ten paddlers, a beating drummer at the front of the boat and a steering helm at the tail end.

The fast and furious racing of this spectacular team event takes place on the Manvers Lake at Wath-Upon-Dearne on Saturday, July 1.

Marie Cragg, trustee of PHASE, urges everyone to get involved: “Get your friends and colleagues together and battle it out.

“It’s exciting, colourful and great fun. No previous experience is required, just plenty of team spirit.”

PHASE Worldwide works to improve the lives of remote Himalayan communities and provide access to basic services like healthcare, education and road transport.

The dragon boat teams are encouraged to raise money through sponsorship which will support PHASE’s important work in Nepal.
