HERRINGTHORPE ROW: Floodlights not a problem

I BELIEVE the main local objection to leasing part of Herringthorpe Playing Fields to Rotherham Rugby Club for amateur rugby is fear of the effects of the proposed floodlighting of the pitches.

I had similar worries when the Tennis Club at the bottom of my garden wished to floodlight their courts. However my worries were groundless.

Modern lighting systems are extremely efficient, just lighting what is required to be lit - after all, to do any other would be a waste of electricity.

My garden is pitch-black at night even though the (lit) courts are just 30 feet away. Surely a far bigger concern is the impression of Rotherham that visitors take away with them.

Sadly I encountered just these kind of sneering attitudes during the recent Rotherham by-election. Let's not confirm their prejudices about our town, instead let us have rugby facilities for our young ones that we can all be proud of.
