Derbyshire adds to firepower

MANAGER Steve Evans has promised to stoke up Rotherham United's fire power still further after making Matt Derbyshire his second summer signing.

The striker has signed from Nottingham Forest on a two-year contract, adding to the capture of young midfielder Conor Newton from Newcastle United.

A former England U21 international, Derbyshire made his breakthrough at Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League and spent time with Olympiacos in Greece before moving back to England to join Forest.

At 28, Evans says his new signing has the experience and the talent to be an asset in the Championship.

He said: "He (Derbyshire) knows he will get competition here because there will be one, two or maybe three others to follow him, plus what we already have.

"We are seriously ambitious about embracing the Championship and we will go into the league with a purpose. We know about the size of the teams in there and we know the size of the task ahead.

"We will be second favourites in the games we are involved in but we are going to go in with the type of player that will give us the chance to win matches. Matt Derbyshire is one of those types that we want here."
