Alma Tavern blaze 'started in roof space'

FIREFIGHTERS closed a town centre street today while they tackled a fire in a disused pub.

Six fire engines attended the Alma Tavern on Westgate at around 4.30am after a fire started in the roof space of the derelict building.

Fire crews removed roof tiles and used an aerial ladder platform with water jets and breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze.

The fire was extinguished within an hour and most engines have now left the scene. A nearby council car park was affected by smoke from the blaze.

A spokesman said that an investigation into the cause of the fire will be launched once it has been dampened down.

On Sunday morning fire crews from Dearne fire station responded to a car fire on Denman Road, Wath-upon-Dearne.

The fire had been started deliberately at around 12.30am when papers were set alight in the vehicle’s footwell, a spokesman said.

He added that damage was confined to the car and that no-one was hurt.
