A DETACHED family home was destroyed after lightning struck causing a fire to rip through the roof and engulf the upstairs bedrooms.

The "freak accident" occurred on Saturday (July 19) on Carson Avenue, Laughton Common, just before 6pm and luckily no one was inside the house at the time.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue (SYFR) said: "The roof of the property was on fire when four fire crews from Maltby, Mansfield Road, Rotherham and Aston stations along with an aerial ladder platform arrived at the scene.
