Aldi unveils plans for larger new Bramley store

The German supermarket chain said it had been overwhelmed by the positive response - so it bought extra land on Bawtry Road to expand proposals.

Concerns had been raised about the state of the site since permission was first granted by the council in April, 2014.

In May this year, it was confirmed that the store’s opening had been put back from this summer to spring 2016.

Matthew Barnes, Aldi’s UK chief executive, said: “Please rest assured we are not having second thoughts.”

Mr Barnes added that the delay had been because they decided to plan a larger store and car park after seeing the positive reaction from residents.

He added: “The feedback Aldi received during the initial consultation process was overwhelming. We will be very proud to be part of this community and would like to remain on good terms with our future neighbours.”

All but one of 175 letters sent to Rotherham Borough Council’s planning department were in support of the plans.

A revised planning application has been submitted and a firm spokeswoman added: “Work will start on site once planning has been passed for the latest plans.”
