Dog handler cleared over bite incident

A DOG handler whose animal bit a by-stander during a police chase will not face any discplinary action.

South Yorkshire Police launched an investigation after Dawn Priestley was bitten by the dog while it was taking part in chasing a suspect in Wincobank last August.

Mrs Priestley, who was hanging out her washing, was bitten three times on her right arm.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) supervised a South Yorkshire Police investigation which concluded this week that the dog handler had not committed any misconduct offence and should not face a disciplinary hearing.

The police’s report concluded that the evidence available showed the dog handler's decision to deploy the dog was “correct, proportionate, lawful and in line with ACPO guidelines, and his training”.
