Rotherham racing driver in fight for life

ROTHERHAM-born racing driver Justin Wilson is fighting for his life after a horror crash yesterday in the USA.

The 37-year-old, born in Moorgate and who lived in Woodall prior to moving to Denver several years ago, suffered a head injury during a race at the Ponoco Raceway in Pennsylvania on Sunday.

The ex-Formula 1 driver, who drives for Andretti Autosport, is understood to have been hit by debris after a car crashed in front of him and he then hit a wall. Wilson was airlifted to Lehigh Valley Health Network Cedar Crest Hospital in Allentown.

The crash happened when debris broke off Sage Karam's car when Karam spun into the wall. Wilson's car veered left and directly into an interior wall.

IndyCar had a subdued victory lane and winner Ryan Hunter-Reay was not sprayed with the traditional confetti.

Indycar officials said in a statement last night: "Wilson is currently in a coma and in a critical condition.

"IndyCar sends its thoughts and prayers to Justin, his family, and Andretti Autosport during this difficult time."
