The day Rotherham united against the EDL: PICTURE GALLERY

IT was the day the eyes of Britain were on Rotherham as hundreds of far-right English Defence League supporters descended on the town to demonstrate about the recent sex grooming revelations.

The EDL claimed that the problem was an Asian one, but people from all sections of society in Rotherham came together in a counter-demonstration against attempts to exploit the situation for racist reasons.

Protesters, including trades unionists, MPs and local clergy, attended Unite Against Fascism’s celebration of Rotherham’s diversity in All Saint’s Square.

In the end the 300 EDL demonstrators dispersed after a couple of hours shepherded by a huge police presence.

And despite the fears of trouble, there were only minor scuffles and the five people arrested were all from Rotherham.

Advertiser photographer Steve Mettam took these pictures of the event.
