Music project opens new home in Dearne valley

PROJECT which helps struggling musicians in the Dearne Valley is set to officially relaunch today (Sept 10).

The Crib Studio event will take place at the Dearne Playhouse in Goldthorpe to highlight what the initiative has to offer.

The studio, a non-profit organisation, is opening its new base in the basement at the Playhouse.

The Crib Studio was first launched in September last year on Cemetery Road in Wombwell but due to a bereavement it had to find a new venue.

An appeal for a new home sparked the offer from the Dearne Playhouse.

Kiri Sykes, of The Crib Studio, said: “We have had a rough few months as the building we were using was donated free of charge by a friend who sadly passed away.

“We help musicians who cannot afford studio time and we are all volunteers. Anything we earn goes to electric for the building and new equipment or fixing of equipment.”

Jeffrey Patterson, producer of the Crib Studio, and two friends came up with the idea last year and the Crib grew from just being a music studio to PA hire and live events.

Kiri said that they were delighted by the new base.

She said: “It was perfect. It was even better than we imagined.

“We could also offer rehearsal rooms, recording, PA hire, mastering – it was a dream come true. We were in heaven.

“We are a non-profit organisation and we help musicians who cannot afford studio prices and help anyone in the community that we can.

“We love seeing the studio back up and running. We’ve worked so hard to get here.

“The Crib is funded by any work we do, whether it be bands recording or studio work or rehearsal. All monies earned are put back into the Crib with new equipment, advertising, equipment fixing and replacing.

“We are all volunteers. We do it out of our love for music.”

Ms Sykes said that The Crib has proved a lifeline for Mr Patterson who suffered a stroke in 2013 and lost the use of his left side and his singing voice.

She said: “The Crib gave him rehabilitation and brought him back to the music scene at 51 years old.”

Mr Patterson has worked with artists such as 7th Heaven, Huff and Herb, The 3 Jays and La Roux.
