Rotherham Council defends controversial Stag roundabout crossings

CONTROVERSIAL zebra crossings on Rotherham’s Stag roundabout are to stay put despite a storm of protest by drivers who claim they are dangerous.

A spokesman for Rotherham Borough Council said this week: ““There is always a settling-in period of a few months when drivers get used to new road layouts.

“There is always an increased risk of road accidents occurring during this time and we will obviously be monitoring the situation.”

The Advertiser has received a string of letters, e-mails, calls and Facebook comments (see this week’s paper) from drivers worried that the crossings are putting lives at risk.

The new pedestrian crossings—which cost the council almost £198,000 to install—were added after requests from shoppers for quicker access to local shops.

But driving instructor Nicholas Mellor (46), who has taught pupils on Rotherham’s roads for five years, said he had already seen three accidents at the traffic island.

He added: “I’m absolutely disgusted. Roundabouts are meant to make people’s lives easier, but they’re making it more difficult.”
