Advice to would-be councillors

AS we approach the season of local council elections I'd like to offer some suggestions to those proposing to stand as candidates.

It is time that those elected began to represent those who reside in their ward and not just the members of a political party, put aside the machinations and manipulations to gain advantage over those who you see as opponents and work together to find innovative ways to provide services so desparately needed by so many people.

Work with voluntary service providers to maximise the money available, remember that you are not elected to preserve the jobs of very well paid council officers ,many of whose tasks are entirely internally generated. Many of them are essential, especially those who are on the lower end of the pay scales.

Think about your own commitment, are you already in receipt of an income, do you really need to claim any more allowances and expenses?

Follow the above and whatever your politics you get my vote.
