Sam, of Ashfield Way in Bramley, achieved the top grade in biology, chemistry, physics and maths. He also bagged a B grade in politics.

“I was really nervous — it’s really scary coming in and not know how you’ve done,” he said.

“But it’s an amazing feeling to come out with those results. I didn’t think I’d do that well.”

Modest Sam has been offered a place to read chemistry at Corpus Christi college.

“It’s such a nice college right in the centre of the city,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to going there — it was always my goal but I wasn’t sure I’d do it.”

Biology teacher Claire Huddart said: “All of Sam’s teachers are immensely proud of Sam’s success. It’s an absolutely fantastic achievement.”

She added: “Sam should be very proud of himself and we wish him all the best.”
