Macmillan is always there for those living with cancer

Amy Hebdon is the fundraising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support in Rotherham. Each month she updates readers on the latest stories and developments by supporters across the town.

SPRING has finally sprung, despite a bit of late snow, the sun has started to shine, and the days are getting longer. But despite this, times are still uncertain for the clinically vulnerable and people living with cancer because of the prevalence of of Covid-19 and current cost of living crisis, so we want the people of Rotherham to know that Macmillan is there for them.

Last year, Macmillan awarded £68,750 in grants to around 190 people living with cancer in Rotherham alone. Macmillan grants helped people across the borough to pay for essentials such as heating bills and hospital transport costs, after they were diagnosed with cancer or underwent treatment.

I recently spoke to Steven from Brinsworth, and he told me about the support he received from Macmillan after he was diagnosed with cancer: “The grant was a lifeline because I'd had to give up work whilst receiving treatment, which was tough as I was self-employed. I’d say don’t be afraid to reach out for help should you need it as Macmillan are there.”

One of the biggest expenses facing people with cancer is higher energy bills. Many people undergoing cancer treatment need to have the heating on for longer periods due to the side-effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

With domestic energy prices due to rise by as much as 50 per cent this month, and further increases expected in October when the energy price cap is raised again, this year could present a triple threat for people with cancer, who are already struggling with the financial impact of their diagnosis and the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic.

At Macmillan, we were only able to award these grants to help the people of Rotherham because of the fantastic work of our fundraisers and supporters, as Macmillan is funded almost entirely by donations.
