LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Safe to cycle and walk in new bus lanes

I ENJOYED the Advertiser’s coverage of the bus fiasco in last week’s paper.

They used to say you wait half an hour for one then two come at once.

Now you wait half an hour for one, they cancel it without telling you, the next one disappears off the face of the earth and there’s nothing in the way of explanation.

Alternative? Get a taxi? Expensive and they are not always available. Cycle or bike? I would if I could. Not all of us are physically able to travel five miles by foot or bicycle.

On the plus side, we will at least have bus lanes which could prove quite useful in an unexpected way.

You see, the cycle lanes are generally a bit dangerous and full of potholes, but a nice new bus lane with no actual buses on it will be great for people to get out and about on their bikes without feeling they are about to be knocked off by an impatient careless driver.

Pedestrians will be able to use them too as there won’t be much danger of them being run over as long as the cyclist is polite enough to give a warning ring of his or her bell.

An ideal solution for everyone except those of us who actually do need to travel by bus.

Is there an opportunity for new small bus/minibus companies to run shuttle services?

Probably, but that would be too simple.

Still, well done to the various authorities for accidentally coming up with some crazy solutions to our transport problems.
