LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Rotherham United fans denied safe exit on New Years Day

I WOULD like to highlight the poor safety issue when Rotherham fans were forced to exit the ground in a dangerous manner after the game against Bolton Wanderers (January 1)!

Following the Bolton game Rotherham fans were denied the safe exit route on New York Way, barriers blocked the way out and fans were directed across a car park and down steep steps behind Riverside House and onto Don Street.

Whilst this route has been used in the past there was always an alternative.

However, over 8,000 fans were sent in the dark over slippery grass verges, parked cars and steep concrete steps in almost complete darkness! Why was this done? Was a safety assessment carried out? And who made this decision?

It may have resulted in someone falling on the steps and with so many fans shoulder to shoulder as they were! A serious accident could have happened.

Lots of fans are elderly and on the night some were clearly distressed.

Can I ask the club to provide emergency floodlights at the steps if this is to continue and only close New York Way if there is no alternative.
