LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Our fathers fought for better future, but that has now gone

I FELT I had to respond to Bob Twynham’s letter “Ripping New Lives Apart” (Advertiser May 5).

He is referring to the thousands of migrants who have managed to cross the channel in recent years.

The migrants in question are mostly single males who were in a safe place prior to reaching our shores; in fact they will have passed through other safe countries on route.

The big question is why would they risk their lives to reach England?

They must have some money as they all appear to have mobile phones and can pay for a boat to get across the channel.

The true answer to that is they know they can live a life of luxury on benefits, get free NHS and be given somewhere to live, all at our expense (the land of their dreams).

There were 25,000 migrants crossed the channel last year, so how can we continue to keep them here?

We are living on a small island, getting more and more densely populated and the people who were born here are suffering the consequences.

We must keep room for those families who are truly in a war-torn country, like in Ukraine at the moment, which is devastating.

Their men are staying to fight for their country, so if these males are fleeing war, why are they not staying to fight for their country.

France don’t want the migrants staying there, that’s why they are able to get the boats and if we don’t make it clear they won’t be allowed to stay here they will continue to come.

Migrants are having to be housed in different parts of the country and as usual Rotherham has volunteered to house them in hotels here.

The government is also wanting to put 1,500 single black men in the RAF base at Linton-on-Ouse whose population is a mere 700. Unbelievable. The immigration system is on its knees.

This country cannot sustain such an influx of people. Have we not learnt the lesson of ‘Free Movement’ that Tony Blair signed us up to and which eventually caused people to vote to leave the EU?

Open borders across Europe has caused the situation we are now all in, and we do not know how many illegal immigrants are wandering our streets.

I fear for what the future holds for my grandchildren’s generation.

The schools can’t cope, hospitals have long waiting lists, people can’t get a NHS dentist, unemployment and people relying on food banks.

I think at 68 my generation has seen the best of life in Britain, most having gone through poorer times, working hard, having respect and expecting nothing.

Our fathers fought in the war for a better and safer future for their families, but sadly that future has now gone.
