LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Little-known story of Rotherham’s heroics

WHAT a cracker that was about HMS Rotherham in the Advertiser. Fame at last for  little old Rotherham.

I bet not many have heard about this story. I didn’t and really enjoyed reading about it.

But, something else I discovered and not many will be able to say this, is it actually happened on the day I was born.

There, I’ve done it, now everyone will know I’m an old fogey.

I also see Ian Hawkridge and the Rotherham District Civic Society were involved in the story. It was to Ian I first sent my rough draft of my story “Just off School Street”. He read it and passed it on to his brother Peter who then told me the society would like to publish it which they did. It’s now at the end of its third and last (?)printing.

They also published my other two books of my memories, Both Sides of the River (about Rawmarsh and ParkGate) and Memories of Dalton Brook.

I’ve often wondered why your sister paper Chase or yourself has not done an article about the Rotherham District Civic Society and the historical features of Rotherham they have done in the past and still do .

I’m sure it would be interesting to see how and when it began.
