Letter: Stricter tests and lower speed limits

I WOULD like to draw our recent “Traffic Trauma” to your attention.

On Wednesday May 11 at approximately 2.55pm, a black saloon car suddenly turned from the left hand lane of Wellgate (going out of town) across the path of a double decker bus, which was in the correct right hand lane for going up Hollowgate. The car collided with the left front of the bus and then sped away up Hollowgate at high speed.

That same day, a female relative, parked in RDGH car park, sounded her horn when a driver was reversing towards her passenger door. His reaction was an angry one, even though he was being warned so as to avoid a collision.

On Thursday May 12 around 6.25pm, a child of about 11 was walking blithely down the middle section of a suburban road, totally impervious to us driving slowly towards her. She did not pause or go onto the pavement and only quick thinking by our driver saved her. Perhaps she was hearing impaired or just unaware of basic road safety.

Then on Friday 13, at 10.15am while travelling down Wellgate, a blue and black car pulled out of the left hand lane leading towards Hollowgate and cut into the main lane on his right directly in front of our car with just a couple of feet to spare! No apology or excusing gesture. While recovering from that we noticed a red private taxi saloon chugging down Wellgate hogging the middle of the road. At the lights, when this car stopped, it was in the path of any buses turning from Doncaster Gate onto Wellgate.

I noticed in the Bawtry district news in The Advertiser of a few weeks ago that the Bawtry residents are calling for a reduction in speed limits in the town to 30mph. May I suggest that speed limits in Rotherham town and suburbs are set at 30 or even 20mph and that some drivers take or retake a driving test.
